Senior officials in the political system and officers at the top of the Israeli military make various statements in the media, including a promise to eliminate the Hamas organization through a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
These promises should be treated with caution as they may stem from great anger over the terrible massacre carried out by Hamas terrorists in the settlements surrounding Gaza and out of a storm of emotions and a desire for revenge, the question is whether this is indeed possible and the IDF can fulfill this mission.
Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization, American Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who was in his military past the commander of the US Army’s Central Command and responsible for the war against ISIS, told Prime Minister Netanyahu during his last visit to Israel, at the weekend, that “Hamas is a much worse organization from the ISIS organization”.
However, the Hamas organization is also a major religious political movement in Palestinian society and has great popular support, in 2006 it won the elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council (Parliament).
Although it is a Sunni organization, it is supported with weapons and a lot of money by Shiite Iran.
Since the “Guardian of the Walls” operation in May 2021, Hamas’s popularity on the Palestinian street has greatly increased after it managed to position itself as the “defender of the Al-Aqsa Mosque”.
Israel will have a very difficult time uprooting Hamas, which is very deeply rooted in Palestinian society, but the IDF can eliminate the military leadership of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and its military infrastructure such as the tunnel system, the rocket depots and their production workshops, the drone system, and more.
Breaking the military power of Hamas in the Gaza Strip is possible but requires an extensive and complex military operation throughout the entire strip.
At the same time, Israel should take a series of additional steps to weaken the power of the Hamas organization.
- Launching an extensive international campaign demanding that Qatar expel from its territory the Hamas leadership in Doha.
- The elimination of the leadership of Hamas abroad – the Israeli Mossad should pursue the leaders of Hamas around the world as it pursued the “Black September” organization and eliminate them.
It was the “Black September” organization that carried out the massacre of the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
- Israel should arrest all Hamas leaders in Judea and Samaria.
- Israel must demand from Turkey the closure of the offices of the Hamas military branch in Istanbul that directs the terrorism in Judea and Samaria.
Israel must act wisely even though it is right, following the great crimes of Hamas, Israel received from the US and other countries in the West extensive freedom of action against this terrorist organization on the condition that it obeys international law and avoids harming innocent Palestinians.
Israel should focus on hitting military targets only and eliminating the leadership of Hamas in the Gaza Strip hiding in bunkers.
If it acts in this way it may further increase its freedom of action, it is in a race against time and Israel’s window of opportunity may close quickly if it makes mistakes in regards to violating international law.
